Churn / Attrition and Retention / Loyalty Models

Churn and retention are major applications of data mining. Churn tends to be employed as a term because it refers to all types of customer attrition - voluntary or involuntary. It is harder to understand and recognise churn in some industries than others. Churn is easiest to spot and define in customer relationships where there are subscriptions and monthly billing. Churn models can either predict that a customer will leave, or estimate the customer's remaining lifetime.
